Delay in distribution of house-site pattas, ration cards resented

TIRUPATI: The CPI(M) on Monday laid a siege to the office of the Revenue Divisional Officer here. Its activists were protesting against the delay in the distribution of ration cards and house-site pattas to all eligible inhabiting the working class colonies in the town.

Normal work was thrown out of gear in the office in the pre-lunch session with the inmates of several colonies, mostly womenfolk, led by the district and town CPI(M) leaders squatting in front of the office and blocking the way of the staff.

Tension

Tension broke out at one stage with the staff members and the agitators jostling each other. A major showdown was however averted with both parties deciding to exercise restraint after initial skirmish.

The demonstrators started converging on the venue right from 8 AM, well ahead of the schedule time and soon filled the entire space in front of the office amid heavy sloganeering and flaunting of placards and party flags. They came prepared for a nightout in the open space outside the premises-- cooking, eating and sleeping in the fore-court-- till the officials concerned conceded their demands.

The CPI(M) district secretary, K.Murali, and other leaders launched a broadside at the Congress for "backtracking" on its poll promises forgetting that it was after all these basic issues which swept them back to power in the State. They said the Congress should note that it would also face the wrath of the electorate as did the TDP and bite the dust if it thought that it could take the people for a ride. The dharna was scheduled to last till Tuesday night.
