Congress agrees to support the candidature

KHAMMAM: The CPI(M) has declared Sameena Afroze as its candidate for the post of chairperson in the Khammam Municipality. The Congress has agreed to support her candidature in the election to be held on Friday.

CPI(M) district secretary T.S. Prasad and Khammam MLA Thammineni Veerabhadram said that the party had decided to allot the chairperson post to a minority candidate, and accordingly Ms. Afroze emerged as the ultimate choice.

Ponnam Vekateswarlu, senior Congress leader, elected to the council from ward no. 1 would be the Congress candidate for the vice-chairman post. The CPI(M) had agreed to support his candidature. The CPI(M), which bagged 17 of the 41 wards in the municipality, would take the support of six Congress members and three independent members.

In the meantime, the Congress lifted the suspension on S. Veerabham who was elected as rebel candidate to the council from ward no. 3. He is expected to rejoin the party and vote as per the decision of the Congress leadership.

Two councillors, who were arrested by the police in connection with the incidents of violence on the day of counting, would not be able to take oath.

So far as the municipalities of Kothagudem, Sathupalli and Yellandu are concerned, hectic lobbying is on for the posts of chairman and vice-chairman. MLAs of constituencies concerned had been coordinating with councillors.
