Convict kills `him'self in escape bid

HYDERABAD, JULY 24. A convict on bail, in order to save himself from imprisonment, reportedly killed another person and tried to pass it for his body by dropping his photo identity card. But, his luck ran out as police caught up with him.

It all started on June 29, when locals of Devaryamjal village in Pet Basheerabad limits complained to the police of a body charred beyond recognition was lying in the bushes. Police found a photo identity card, through which they "identified" the body as that of Motilal.

But police had their doubts because there was no reason for the culprits to leave the ID card of the "victim" when they had burnt the body completely. And, who would want to kill Motilal, already sentenced to five years' imprisonment?

Motilal was involved in several offences and had allegedly carried out a dacoity in Chilkalguda police limits. Later, he was arrested and remanded. The court sentenced him to five years' imprisonment. He came out on bail and was issued summons to surrender before June 27.

According to the Pet Basheerabad Sub-Inspector, K.Srinath Reddy, Motilal hatched a plan with his relative Anjulal, an auto rickshaw driver, to kill a person with similar features. On the night of June 28, both went to a toddy compound where they spotted Venkatachary, a carpenter and resident of Gummadidala village.

Motilal befriended him and offered him carpentry work. When they reached the village outskirts, Motilal strangled Venkatachary with a rope killing him instantly. Later, he dumped the body in the bushes, doused it with diesel and set it afire. He then dropped his photo ID card near the body and both left.

Later, the Sarpanch of Chennapur village in Medak district (the native of Motilal) received an anonymous call that Motilal had died in an accident. Similarly, calls were made to two police stations informing them that Motilal was dead. The Pet Basheerabad police took over the charred body and after post-mortem, handed it over to Motilal's family members who cremated it.

Meanwhile, police questioned Motilal's brother, Ramesh, who revealed that Motilal took his ID card along with him on June 28. Suspecting foul play, police started questioning his family members. Pressure mounting on him, the accused surrendered before the court.

The police then took him into custody and grilled him when he narrated the story. The Pet Basheerabad police arrested him on Saturday. Mr. Srinath Reddy carried out the investigation under the supervision of the Alwal inspector Venkanna.
