Contract workers picket SE's office for salary arrears

CUDDAPAH, MARCH 17. Contract workers of sub-stations picketed the office of SE (Transmission Lines and Sub-Stations) here on Thursday demanding payment of four-month salary arrears.

The United Electricity Employees' Union State working president, D. Ramesh, the TL&SS unit divisional president, G.C.S. Subbarayudu, and the general secretary, K. Srinivasulu, said contract workers had been awaiting salaries for the last two to four months in the district.

They demanded issue of identity cards to contract workers.

The CITU district general secretary, N. Ravisankar Reddy, decried grant of clearance and performance certificates by officials in February to contractors who had not been entered into any agreement with workers since September 2003.

The Transco's orders to blacklist such contractors was ignored by officials, who colluded with them, Mr. Reddy alleged. The Chief Engineer (TL & SS), C. Prahlada, and the divisional engineer, Rangaiah, assured steps for payment of salary arrears by April 2, the union leaders said.
