Congress, TRS MLAs to visit RDS

HYDERABAD, MARCH 17. Congress and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLAs of Mahbubnagar will visit the project site of Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme (RDS) in Raichur district of Karnataka on Friday for a first hand evaluation of the intricacies involved in the hydel power station coming up there.

The Congress MLAs led by Telangana Regional Congress Coordination Committee (TRCCC) convener, G. Chinna Reddy, called on the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Thursday and informed him of their proposed visit to the project.

Mr. Reddy told reporters later that they had requested the Chief Minister to stop the works on the hydel station until the three-member technical committee appointed to go into project details submitted its report.

Dr. Reddy was said to have confided that he would ask the committee to expedite its report.

Meanwhile, the CPI and CPI (M) delegations visited the project on Wednesday and declared that they would request their Central committees to mount pressure on the UPA Government to stop the work on the station.

Loss to irrigation

The CPI Floor Leader in Assembly, Chada Venkat Reddy, and the CPI(M) MLA, Md. Ghafoor, told reporters that they found prima facie evidence about loss to irrigation in Mahbubnagar on account of the power station.

They accused the Karnataka Government of going against the Bachawat tribunal recommendations in granting permission to projects.

After violations in implementation of hydel stations at Suguru and Siriguppi, the Government had now turned its attention to RDS.

They called for playing down the political overtones of the problem since the need of the hour was to protect the farmers' interests.
