Completion of pending projects demanded

MAHABUBNAGAR, FEB. 26. The district convention on utilisation of water resources that was held here on Thursday under the aegis of the CPI(M) in a resolution demanded that the party whichever come to power in the coming elections complete all the pending irrigation projects in the district within two years.

The convention, which was presided over by the CPI(M) district secretary, Vanaganti Eshwar, deplored that the successive governments since inception of the State failed to utilise the waters of Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers that flow through the district, jeopardising the interests of the farming community. As a result of negligence of two successive governments towards making use of the water resources in the district, lakhs of small and marginal farmers became farm labourers who migrate to other places for nine months in a year in search of livelihood, the convention felt. The convention lambasted the State Government for laying foundation stones for construction of irrigation projects during the election time and forgetting later.

To substantiate its allegation, the convention cited the example of Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation scheme for which the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, laid the foundation stone just before 1999 elections but did not bother to ensure its construction. The convention also attacked the State Government for repeating the same gimmick this time also by laying the foundation stone for Nettempadu lift irrigation and according administrative approval for Koilsagar, Chandraghad and other two lift irrigation schemes recently.
