City to get funds under mega project

VISAKHAPATNAM : Visakhapatnam city will be included in the mega city development scheme of the Central Government which will help realise its potential in full.

Thanks to the efforts of Visakhapatnam MP N. Janardhana Reddy, Vizag will get is share in the Rs.50,000-crore fund allocated under the head. Apart from this, separate funds would be allocated for providing several amenities like the light rail transit system which will also be introduced in the port-cum-steel city.

Mr. Janardhana Reddy, who is also the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas, told media persons who met him here on Saturday that the Visakh Refinery of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) would expand its capacity from 7.5 million tonnes to 13 MT.

Armament project

A Naval armament project was also sanctioned for the city, the details of which could not be divulged as it was a Defence project, he added.

Informed sources said that the MP met the new Central Minister for Urban Development S. Jaipal Reddy in Delhi on Friday and sought funds under the mega city scheme for Visakhapatnam.

He had also met the Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel and invited him to see for himself the conditions at Visakhapatnam airport.

He suggested improving the airport facilities by setting up a coordination committee with the city elite and take its advice in the matter.

Mr. Patel was believed to have assured the MP that he would make a personal visit to Visakhapatnam city during the Parliament session.
