Case booked against engineers

VIJAYAWADA, APRIL. 24. The district election authorities have booked a case against a multinational construction firm and Government engineers concerned for allegedly making a trial run of a lift irrigation scheme which is near completion and creating the impression that water is being pumped into an irrigation canal to influence voters in favour of the Telugu Desam Party candidate from Nandigama Assembly constituency.

The district Collector and District Election Officer, K. Prabhakar Reddy, said here on Saturday that cases had been booked against the company and Irrigation Department engineers for violating the model code of conduct. The Joint Collector and Returning Officer of Vijayawada Lok Sabha Constituency, P. Sampath Kumar, giving details said a Executive Engineer of the Nagarjunasagar Project issued a press release saying that a trial run of the Vedadri Lift Irrigation Scheme would be made on Friday at 11 a.m.

The press release was printed in vernacular dailies and the credit for completion of the scheme was given to the TDP candidate for Nandigama Assembly. Though the trial run was aborted for technical reasons the villagers in the area were taken for a ride because the Irrigation authorities released water from NSP at around the sometime. Cases were booked against Congress candidate for Vijayawada Lok Sabha constituency, Lagadapati Rajagopal, and TDP candidate for Mylavaram Assembly constituency, Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao, "because there was material evidence of them violating model code of conduct.''
