YSR pays tributes

to Netaji

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Sunday paid glowing tributes to veteran freedom fighter and former president of Indian National Congress (1937-39) Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on the occasion of his 109th birth anniversary tomorrow.

In a message, he described Netaji as a patriot who emerged as a legend with his fierce struggle against the tyranny of British imperialism and sacrifice for independence. - Special Correspondent

Two scribes in police custody

KHAMMAM: The police picked up two scribes for their alleged links with the CPI(Maoist) in Yellandu town on Sunday. They searched the houses of a few others, including a reporter working for a news channel.

According to reports, Naveen, reporter of a local news channel, was taken into custody.

Another reporter working for the same channel, R. Venkateswarlu, was also said to be in the custody of the police.

Sangareddy: Ushamma of Kothappali village of Sivampet mandal allegedly poisoned to death her 70-year-old father-in-law Ambayya, her son Kosayya (10) and daughter Chittemma (6). According to Toopran CI Chandrasekhar Goud, Ushamma's mother Muthamma, a resident of Ankireddypalli of Rangareddy district, helped her in the sinister plan. The police said that Ushamma mixed poison in toddy and made the three to drink. While Ambayya died in the early hours, the children died on the way to hospital. - Staff Reporter

Bus passengers robbed

Nellore: Unidentified persons wearing masks, robbed passengers of an RTC bus in Dagadarti forest area of the district on Saturday night.

According to available information, the crime was committed when the bus was on its way from Nellore to Manubolupadu. The culprits stopped the vehicle by putting boulders on the road and when it was halted, they barged into the bus and forcibly took away ornaments and cash, at knifepoint. Chief of Naval Staff

to visit ENC today

VISAKHAPATNAM: Chief of the Naval Staff Arun Prakash will arrive here on Monday for a day's visit to the Eastern Naval Command. During his visit, Admiral Arun Prakash will be reviewing the various preparatory activities for the Presidential Fleet Review to be held in February at Visakhapatnam.

He will be holding discussions with Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the ENC Sureesh Mehta and inspect the various event venues in the Naval Base and the city. - Staff Reporter

Fake naxals rob trader

Kakinada: Two miscreants in olive uniform and toy guns knocked at the door of a trader Burella Veera Venkata Satya Harinatha Padmanabha Rao (32) in Konalova village in the agency area under Addateegala Police station limits late on Saturday night and claiming themselves to be naxals, looted Rs.2.75 lakhs in cash and 20 sovereigns of gold ornaments after inflicted injuries on the victims face with a knife. - Correspondent

Silver stolen

VIZIANAGARAM: A gang of dacoits fired at a jewellery shop owner near his house in Parvathipuram at 8.45 pm on Saturday and took away 15 kg of silver kept in bags from his assistant. According to Circle Inspector K. Ch. Raghuveer, an unidentified gang of eight to10 members initially burnt crackers to scare away people nearby and fired at the jeweller Sanka Madhusudhana Rao who was returning home along with his assistant A. Ganga Rao on a motor cycle.

Mr. Madhusudhana Rao received bullet injury in his abdomen. Mr. Ganga Rao was given first aid. -Correspondent

Pause to ration card distribution

Nellore: The ongoing agitation by revenue staff and the Congress plenary at Hyderabad have temporarily derailed the process of ration card distribution in some mandals, including Kaluvoy and Rapur, where the process was supposed to begin on January 24.
