Maoist leaders produced before court

NIZAMABAD: The CPI (Maoist) leaders -- Ganti Prasadam and Yamasani Surender -- who were taken into custody from judicial remand by the police for further interrogation were produced before the First Class Judicial Magistrate, P. Rajeswari, here on Monday. On direction of the Magistrate, they were shifted to the district prison for remand till June 17. The Virasam member, N. Venugopal, who was also taken into custody, was remanded in judicial custody. - Staff Reporter

Naxalite surrenders

ADILABAD: Sidam Srikrishna alias Jangu dada (27), a Pardhan tribal who worked as a porter carrying luggage of Maoists in Adilabad forests since July last, surrendered before the police here on Monday. Producing him at a press conference, Kripanand Tripathi Ujela, SP, said Srikrishna had joined the Indervelli dalam and later worked in Mangi dalam. - Staff Reporter

Selections for DM/MCh courses

VIJAYAWADA: Selections for admission into DM/MCh (superspecialty) courses for the academic year 2005-06 will be held at NTR University of Health Sciences from 11 a.m. on July 13. In a press released issued here on Monday, the university Registrar, P. Jayakar Babu, said that an entrance test was conducted by the university on May 29. Diwakar Reddy unhurt in road accident

CUDDAPAH: The Minister for Panchayat Raj, J.C. Diwakara Reddy, escaped unhurt when his jeep hit a lorry from behind near Rayachoti on Monday. The Minister was coming from Bangalore to Cuddapah to inaugurate a private school complex. The Rayachoti police registered a case against the lorry driver. The Minister later inaugurated the school complex and addressed a press conference. - Staff Reporter

Row over farm land: two murdered

Mahabubnagar: Two persons of Modipoor village of Koil Konda mandal were murdered by their rival group on Monday. According to information reaching here, fair price shop dealer of the village, Rajgopal, and a school teacher, Venkat Naik, were killed with sickles by a six-member gang who had a dispute with the victims over an agriculture land. - Correspondent

Four held on theft charge at Tirumala

TIRUMALA: The crime police on Monday took four persons involved in two different cases of pickpocketing into custody. Ironically, both incidents of theft occurred in Tirumala temple. P. Mahesh (21), a native of Kurnool, and Ravindra Naidu (28) of Penumur were arrested based on the complaint of a devotee who had lost his purse on Sunday night inside the temple. Srinivasulu of Nellore and Ganesan from Tamil Nadu were arrested for committing a similar crime on Monday morning. - Staff Reporter

Exam toppers to be rewarded

Cuddapah: The Helen Keller's High School for the Deaf on Monday invited applications from physically challenged students who topped the seventh standard and SSC exam, by June 20 for the Helen Keller merit awards for the disabled. YSR statement criticised

NELLORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken exception to the remarks of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, at Kurnool during his `Nagara Baata' programme on Sunday that the Government would take all steps to implement 5 per cent quota for Muslims from this academic year. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, the BJP State secretary, K. Haystacks gutted

NELLORE: Property worth more than Rs. 70,000 was destroyed in four separate fire mishaps in the district on Monday. While a thatched house was destroyed in Nagulavaram of Bogole mandal due to a spark from a kerosene lamp, haystacks were burnt in Yadavapalem (Bogole mandal), Kuricherlapadu (Venkatachalasatram mandal) and Utukuru (Vidavaluru mandal). - Staff Reporter
