VIJAYAWADA: Registering their protest against the endowments land scam, activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday took out a procession in the city and demanded an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the reported irregularities in the department.

The procession began at the party office in Suryaraopet and passed through main thoroughfares via Vijaya theatre, Eluru Road and Besant Road and culminated at the Sub-Collector's office. The party district in-charge and Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, Subhash Chanderjee, who led the procession, faulted the Government for failing to protect the assets of temples and Hindu religious institutions.

He asked the Government to recover endowment lands from `land grabbers' and hand them over to devasthanams concerned, besides taking up stringent action against the officials involved in the scam. "There are no caretakers for some thousands of temples across the State. The Government must sanction funds and take the necessary steps to reopen the closed temples," Mr. Chanderjee said.
