BJP alleges bid to put off civic polls

HYDERABAD, DEC. 6. The BJP today charged the Government with planning to put off the municipal elections and appoint special officers to civic bodies by dissolving them since 70 per cent were controlled by opposition parties.

Addressing a press conference here, the BJP national secretary, B. Dattatreya, demanded that the Government clarify the reported move to replace the direct election of the municipal chairmen and mayors with the indirect method. He said the elections should be held on schedule (March) as per the Constitution.

He wanted the Government to spell out the basis for creation of new wards and the details of BC reservation for chairman post.
