BIDAR: Members of several trade unions in Bidar joined the nationwide strike against the Union Government's "anti people" policies.

Members of the Communist Party Of India (Marxist) and other organisations also demanded significant changes in the United Progressive Alliance Government's policies on labour reforms.

Demands

They also demanded that the formation of the sixth Pay Commission, dropping the plans for privatising provident fund management, withdrawal of increase in fuel prices, and stopping disinvestment of Public Sector Undertakings.

They said the UPA Government was systematically dismantling the social security system.

Agent of funding agencies

They also alleged the UPA Government was acting as an agent of the World Bank and other funding agencies and not as a representative of the people.

"The previous Union Government fooled us into believing that we are living in a prosperous country with their `India Shining' campaign. The UPA Government is blindly following it," general secretary of the party's district unit Vijay Kumar Sonare said.

They gheraoed Minister for Forest and district in-charge Gurupadappa Nagamarpalli when he tried to pass through Ambedkar Circle.

They let him go after he assured to convey their concerns to the Government.

They submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Minister for Finance P. Chidambaram. The State Government Employees' Federation also supported the strike called by the Central Trade Union Committee.
