Ban on naxals condemned

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Human Rights Forum (HRF) on Friday condemned the ban imposed by the State Government on the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and seven of its front organisations.

HRF's State secretary V.S. Krishna said: "Proscribing parties, mass organisations and writers organisations is fundamentally against the democratic spirit. The naxalite movement must be dealt politically and not by resorting to such bans. This is a direct assault on the fundamental freedom of expression and assembly guaranteed by the Constitution.''

He said that the ban would affect the people from the downtrodden sections who constituted the support base of Marxist-Leninist movements. ``The existing rules under the Indian Penal Code, the Arms Act and the Explosives Act are sufficient to deal with the violence committed by the naxalites.''
