Ban on gutka sale to be reconsidered

HYDERABAD, MARCH 24. The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said that the Government will give a fresh look at re-imposing ban on sale of gutka in the State after studying a similar decision in the neighbouring Maharashtra.

Dr. Reddy made this announcement in response to a plea from the Telugu Desam Party leader, N. Janardhan Reddy, at a workshop on `Tobacco-free initiative programme for policy makers' and launch of anti-HIV, TB intensified campaign, supported by the Union Health Ministry and the Department for International Development (DFID), UK, here on Thursday.

The Chief Minister said that he had already directed the Principal Secretary, Health and Family welfare, I.V. Subba Rao, to study the implementation of the ban in Maharashtra. The Supreme Court had lifted the ban on sale of gutka but the Maharashtra Government re-imposed it recently.
