Balijas demand BC status

CUDDAPAH, MARCH 17. Balija community, constituting 30 per cent of the State population, should be granted backward class status, the Andhra Pradesh Kapunadu chairman, M. Venkata Rao, demanded on Thursday.

Kapunadu had been making the demand since 1982, he told a press conference here. The former Chief Minister, K. Vijayabhaskar Reddy, decided to include Balijas in the BC list, but the subsequent TDP Government shelved the proposal, he alleged. He demanded caste-wise social and economic survey basing on the census.

The Government appointed chairmen for 36 corporations but only one went to the Balija community, Mr. Rao lamented. No university has a Vice-Chancellor from the community, he decried.
