HYDERABAD: The School Education Minister, N. Rajyalakshmi, has claimed that Badi Baata, the enrolment drive taken up Statewide from June 6 to 11with the involvement of teachers, parents and NGOs, is successful.

At a press conference here on Monday, she nailed the criticism from certain quarters that the drive was a failure and suffered from several lapses saying that 10,43,661children were identified under the programme and arrangements were under way to enrol them in schools. Out of them, 8,70,660 were freshers requiring enrolment in first standard while 1,10,140 others were dropouts and 62,861 did not see school at all.

Ms. Rajyalakshmi said the Government's objective under the drive was to enrol five lakh more children in addition to 10,43,661 and this would be achieved by July 15. As all these figures covered only Government schools, the enrolment in private schools would be additional. Badi Baata would continue till the last illiterate child was enrolled, she said. Ms. Rajyalakshmi said the participation by teachers in the drive was 70 per cent in districts on an average.
