Attempt on TDP leader's life: four held

VIJAYAWADA, OCT.7. The city police on Thursday claimed to have solved the mystery behind the abortive attempt on the life of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader, Katragadda Naga Malleswara Rao alias Babu, with the arrest of four persons.

The police claimed that the murder attempt, in which Mr. Babu sustained two bullet injuries, was a sequel to a real estate feud between the victim and the prime accused, Koganti Satyanarayana alias Satyam, of Krishna Lanka.

The accused

Though Mr. Satyam is yet to be arrested, four others -- M.Venkateswara Rao alias Peddodu (30), N. Vijaya Kumar alias Vijay (31), B. Durga Bhsakar alias Prasad (27), and V. Nageswara Rao alias Nagu (40) -- charged with carrying out the attack were arrested from a hotel in Guntur district on Thursday evening.

They were produced at a late night news conference held by the South Circle Inspector, N. Venkat Reddy, Inspector Lakshmipathi and One Town Sub Inspector, Pallapu Raju, who effected the arrest.

The plot

The Police said that Mr. Satyam bore a grudge against Mr. Babu as the latter reportedly planned to eliminate him. He allegedly roped in the services of Vangaveeti Santhan Kumar, an arch rival of Mr. Babu, and the duo, hired the services of the four main accused to carry out the attack.

While Peddodu, Vijay and Prasad carried out the attack on Mr. Babu, two others Nagu and Rambabu Yadav, helped the accused in the procurement of a Yamaha motorcycle and two revolvers for facilitating the attack, the police claimed.

The evidence

Two revolvers and other material purported to have been used in the attack were seized from their possession. The police are now on the lookout for Satyam, Santhan Kumar and Yadav, who are said to be at large.
