VIJAYAWADA: The city police are gearing up to host the three-day 39th State-level police sports meet scheduled to be held here from July 24.

While the Director-General of Police, Swaranjeet Sen, will inaugurate the event, the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, will participate in the valedictory session.

Over 2,500 police personnel from across the State will take part in events like football, hockey, volleyball, basketball, handball, kabaddi, gymnastics, weightlifting, swimming, judo, boxing and wrestling.

The police have booked all the stadiums in the city, including the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Staidum, Indoor Stadium, A.S. Rama Rao Indoor Hall, Siddhartha College grounds, Andhra Loyola College grounds and the VMC Swimming Pool, well in advance for the mega event.

Panels formed

Committees have been formed to take care of hospitality, facilities at the stadiums, maintenance of the event schedule and conduct of cultural programmes.

The expenditure is expected to be around Rs. 17 lakhs for the three-day event, which the police have to collect by inviting sponsorship from traders and industrialists.

"We are bringing out a souvenir to pool funds for the event. The sponsors are asked to make their payments only through cheques and drafts," the Commissioner of Police, Umesh Sharraf said. Officials of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, the VGTM-UDA and the revenue departments are assisting the police in making arrangements for the event. A team of officials recently visited the stadiums and grounds and expressed satisfaction over the facilities.

However, three events - boxing, wrestling and judo - will be held in Hyderabad, as the city stadiums do not have facilities to conduct the events.

"It is one of the biggest annual events conducted by the Police Department. Police personnel from the rank of Inspector-General to constable will take part in the event. We have to put more efforts to make the event a success," Mr. Sharraf said.
