Drop in humidity

Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 37.2 degree celsius and a minimum of 27.9 degree celsius, on Saturday. Humidity dropped from 67 per cent in the morning to 57 per cent in the evening.

Following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: Groundnut oil-52, palmolein oil-45.75, sunflower oil-51, tamarind (flower variety)-26 to 33, tamarind (karipuli variety)-33 to 42, chillies-18 to 23, rice (2716)-11 to 11.50, rice (super fine)-13 to 13.50, rice (samba masoori)-13.50 to 14, black gram-19.45 to 21.80 and red gram-24 to 29.50.

SP candidate's vow

Samajwadi Party candidate from Vijayawada East Assembly constituency, G. Gangadhar, on Saturday said his main intention of contesting elections was to wage a battle against undemocratic forces. In a statement here, Mr. Gangadhar said his objective was to ensure social justice to all by waging a political war against `destructive forces'.

Mahayaagam ends

Thread ceremonies were performed on a large scale at Panchamukha Veeranjaneyaswamy temple, as part of the Satha Hanumath Chandiyaaga Poorvaka Atirudreeya Maha Yaagam, here on Saturday. Sri Sundara Hanuman Dharmika Parishad has been organising the yaagam from April 5 which would conclude on Sunday.

Prevention of

blindness

Blindness could be prevented to a large extent through awareness, said eye specialist, A. Srinivas. He was speaking at a health programme organised on prevention of blindness by the Vasavya Nursing Home here on Saturday. Samaram, doctor of the nursing home presided.

Earth Day celebrated

Nearly 300 stamps on plants, animals, waterfalls, fish, birds and flowers of different countries were exhibited at the D.A.V Public school here as part of the Earth Day celebrations. Students also displayed paintings stressing the need to protect the earth.

Entrance to MDS

The NTR University of Health Sciences proposes to conduct entrance test for admissions to Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) courses for the academic year 2004-2005. In a statement here on Saturday, the University Registrar, Jaykar Babu, said the exams would be conducted on May 16 from 11 am to 12.30 p.m. at the Government Dental College and hospital, Afzalgunj, in Hyderabad.
