Huge swing in humidity

The Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 35.9 degree Celsius and a minimum of 21.9 degree Celsius on Wednesday. The humidity dropped from 90 per cent in the morning to 46 per cent in the evening.

Commodity prices

The following are the prices of essential commodities (in rupees per kg) in the local wholesale market on Wednesday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: groundnut oil - 54.50, palmolein oil - 46.75, sunflower oil - 53, tamarind (flower variety) - 26 to 30, tamarind (Karipuli variety) - 33 to 36, chillies - 23 to 28, rice (2716) - 11 to 11.50, rice (super fine) - 13 to 13.50, rice (samba masoori) - 13.50 to 14, black gram - 20 and red gram - 25.

No power supply

Residents of some of the localities under the Ring Road section will not have power supply from 7 am to 12.30 p.m. The affected areas would include: Gayathri Nagar, Kala Nagar, Sai Nagar, Municipal Employees' Colony and Siddartha Nagar.

Girl child welfare stressed

The Collector, K. Prabhakar Reddy, on Wednesday urged officials to ensure proper education and medical facilities to girl children hailing from financially poor background.

Addressing a meeting of the Women and Child Development Department's community project development officers, the Collector said officers should strive to ensure good health to every girl child in society and pave way for her all-round development.

Corporator's protest

M. Venkata Prasad, 43rd division corporator, launched a relay-hunger strike in front of the Central Research Centre for Homeopathy clinic, protesting against the move to shift it from the city to Gudivada.

The corporator was accompanied by his associates, who raised slogans against the decision to shift the centre. Earlier, Mr. Prasad paid tributes to Baba Saheb Ambedkar by garlanding his portrait placed at the venue.

Electrical expo

The SPAC India event managers plan to organise an all-India electrical exhibition, Electriex-2004. In a statement, the company informed that the expo would be a three-day event commencing March 5 at IV Palace in Governorpet.
