APCC chief asks cadre to monitor `boons' programme

HYDERABAD Oct .28. The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, D. Srinivas on Tuesday called upon the party cadre at the grassroots to carefully monitor the distribution of assets under the one crore boons programme announced by the Government to ensure that only genuine beneficiaries received the benefits.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the district Congress Committee presidents at Gandhi Bhavan, he said that though the Congress welcomed the hurry with which the State Government was trying to distribute assets to the people, there was a need to carefully monitor the distribution to ensure that the programme was not used to shower favours on the TDP leaders and cadre. "There is always a scope for the one crore boons programme to be utilised to serve the interests of the ruling party cadre. The cadre should therefore carefully monitor the distribution of assets," he said.

Stating that the Government's moves indicated that it was in favour of advancing the elections, he asserted that the Congress was geared up to face the polls whenever they were held. The party only demanded that the Government come out with valid reasons if it intended to advance the polls. On its part, the feedback received by the Congress was encouraging as the reports from all the districts indicated that the people were solidly rallying behind the party. The party district-level leaders were in fact appealing to the party State leadership not to stall the Government's moves if it wanted to advance the elections.

On the proposed Prajahita Yatra, commencing on November 3 at Rajahmundry, he said that the Congress leaders would cover East and West Godavari districts in the first phase and the schedule for other areas would be released periodically. The first phase of the 20-day yatra may be conducted in more than one spell depending on the situation. When asked as to whether the AICC AP affairs in-charge, Ghulam Nabi Azad, had confirmed his participation, he said as of now, Mr. Azad was not well and in case he was unable to come, other senior leaders like R.P.N. Singh would participate in the programme.

Mr. Srinivas who earlier released the posters of the Prajahita Yatra said that the DCC presidents and leaders were asked to coordinate with the constituency in-charges and complete the party's membership drive before November 15. This apart, they were also asked to monitor the constitution of booth committees at village level besides bringing to the notice of the officials concerned the changes, if any, in booths.
