VIJAYAWADA, MARCH 24. The 16th division corporator, J. Suryanarayana, also known as Rudraiah, is a content man. And, why not?

It was during his five-year tenure that development works worth over Rs. 4 crores were taken up in the division. Of the total amount, Rs. 1 crore was spent from the corporator's budget while the balance was from the general budget of the corporation. A major portion of the division now boasts of either CC or BT roads, there is a well-developed playground, a gymnasium for women, indoor shuttle badminton stadium, DWCRA bazaar as well as a tailoring unit offering free training to women in this division.

No complaints

"The only problem is with the traffic and the open drains which I could not negotiate during the past five years," Mr. Suryanarayana says.

The Congress party's first time corporator is happy that he could fulfil all the promises he made to residents before the elections.

And, unlike most of his counterparts of other parties, Mr. Suryanarayana has no complaints regarding the response from officials. "All the officials are good and they understand the problems of the residents. It is up to us to take specific proposals within the constraints of the budget and they are ready to take up the works," he says.

In this context, he cites the improvements made to the water supply system in his division with an outlay of Rs. 40 lakhs and also the works taken up for setting up grills in the open drains for enabling regular desiltation and avoiding stagnation or overflow of sewerage at any point of time. "But the works taken up on open drains serve the purpose temporarily and establishing an underground drainage system is the need of the hour," he says admitting probably this is the only wish of the residents he could not fulfil during his tenure as a corporator.
