A `fund'amental debate

HYDERABAD, AUG. 1. Did the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad get Rs. 300 crores from the Centre for improving Hussainsagar canals or not after the August 2000 floods? This became a point of debate as BJP leaders -- G. Kishen Reddy, MLA, and the Deputy Mayor, Subash Chanderji, -- contested the claim of corporation officials that no money was received.

"I was present when the cheque was given by the Union Ministers Jagmohan and Bandaru Dattatreya," said Mr. Reddy even as officials put on blank faces. When the Municipal Administration Minister, K. Ranga Rao, too, expressed his doubts and said Ministers do not ever issue cheques, the BJP leaders said the funds were obtained from HUDCO. But Mr. Ranga Rao stuck to his stand. "I have been a Minister for 10 years earlier and Ministers do not give cheques," he said and the Principal Secretary, S.R. Rao, seconded him. The BJP leaders, however, were not convinced and promised to come up with proof soon.
