HYDERABAD: Prominent veteran from Naxalbari peasant movement and Kanu Sanyal’s close associate Shanti Munda inaugurated the two-day State congress of Stree Vimukthi Sanghatana here on Sunday. She hoisted the organisation’s flag and kicked off the events at Thulja Bhavan in Kacheguda.

The premises of the old meeting hall assumed a different tone and colour on Sunday, the first day of the meet, as scores of women from different districts congregated there to listen their problems discussed. The meeting had participants from Orissa too, apart from places such as Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Guntur and others. Women largely from lowest social rung, most often tribal areas, formed the audience.

Editor of ‘Stree Sanghatana’ bulletin and Professor at Kakatiya University T.Jyothi Rani spoke extensively about the issues of contemporary women both in lower and middle classes. She observed that though women from both the social strata faced violence and oppression from males in their respective families, expression of the same differed.

S.Jhansi, State president of Rythu Kooli Sangham and Ratnamala from ViRaSam were among those who spoke at the meeting. Veteran social worker Malladi Subbamma, and B.Suryasagar from Janasahiti were among those who attended. The event was marked by electrifying cultural performances by young women.
