Woman barbers seek quota

TIRUPATI: In an interesting development, women barbers working in the TTD ‘Kalyanakatta’ (tonsuring centre) on Tuesday urged the management to implement the 33 per cent reservation in the recruitment of barbers. K. Radhadevi, who played a crucial role in making the TTD rope in women barbers into the Kalyanakatta amid heavy odds on social and ethical grounds, in a representation submitted to the Executive Officer, wanted that women must get their share in the 650 posts of barbers available in the Kalyanakatta. Besides, we must also be recognised as regular employees, she said. She also regretted that though it was more than a year since women barbers were appointed at Tirumala, they were not given identity cards, uniforms, exclusive dormitory, attached bathroom and other facilities.
