Police take BJP activists into custody

BJP demands arrest of culprits, calls for bandh

KARIMNAGAR: Curfew-like situation prevailed in Karimnagar town on Saturday when violent mobs took out rallies in protest against the dispute that arose during the Durga idol immersion procession near Patha Bazaar here on Friday night.

Violence broke out between two groups during the immersion procession. The miscreants clashed and damaged a two-wheeler. However, police swung into action and dispersed the mob. Sensing trouble, the Karimnagar police clamped Section 144 in the town since Friday night.

Violating Section 144, the mob went berserk at the Indira Chowk, in the heart of the city and attacked all the passersby including the women. They attacked commercial establishments and broke the glass panes of several shops and also three RTC buses. The mob also entered a nearby cinema hall and chased away the viewers and threatening media cameramen of dire consequences.

The police, who were present in large numbers, remained mute spectators when the mob went on rioting in the town and terrorised the locals. Superintendent of Police Y. Gangadhar, Officer on Special Duty Harikrishna, DSP V. Ranga Rao and others rushed to the spot and chased away the protestors with a warning.

Mild tension

Earlier, the BJP team led by Kisan Morcha state president P. Sugunakar Rao, town president D. Sridhar and others visited the Patha Bazaar area and interacted with the affected people.

When mild tension was sensed the police pre-empted further devastation by arresting the BJP leaders and shifting them to the nearby LMD police station. The police sources said that they had arrested four persons responsible for the clashes. In the meantime, the BJP town unit has called for Karimnagar town bandh on Monday demanding the Government arrest the culprits involved in the group clashes.

Constable suspended

Meanwhile, Karimnagar district Superintendent of Police Y. Gangadhar on Saturday suspended Two Town head constable Altaf on charges of dereliction of duties, failing to control the clashes in the town on Friday night during the Durga idol immersion, official sources here stated.
