TDP takes up Kalwakurthy works issue

MAHABUBNAGAR: The Zilla Parishad General Body meeting was adjourned on Wednesday following unruly scenes with the Telugu Desam members demanding a discussion on the ongoing Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation works.

As soon as the meeting began, TDP members led by Vangoor ZPTC member Jaipal Yadav wanted a discussion on the issue. They alleged that project engineers had decided to install motors manufactured by Austria and Finland companies in place of motors made by BHEL. They pleaded that the motors of these companies were inferior in the quality when compared to those of BHEL.

But the Congress members opposed the TDP members initiating the discussion on Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Works.

They insisted that the meeting should follow the agenda and specified subjects only should be discussed. This led to heated exchanges between ruling and Opposition party members, so much so, rivals even manhandled each other near the podium at one point of time.

Chairman K. Damodar Reddy asked officials to stick to the agenda as unrelenting TDP members squatted before the dais, raising anti-Government slogans. Mr. Reddy adjourned the meeting for 15 minutes, but it resumed only after lunch.

Meanwhile, the chairperson held discussions with the members of all parties in his chambers and decided to pass a resolution urging Government to use BHEL motors only. Later, a unanimous resolution was passed in the meeting to this effect.

Another resolution demanding implementation of G.O. 610 in Toto was also passed unanimously, proposed by TRS MLA from Jadcherla C. Laxma Reddy.

When agriculture subject came up for discussion, most members alleged that seeds supplied by Government for Khariff were insufficient and sold at higher prices, also alleging that spurious seeds were sold in the market openly.
