Trainee constables work in tandem to nab the accused

ONGOLE: Five trainee constables worked in tandem and held the duo fleeing on a motorcycle after snatching a gold chain from a woman at Podili at 10.30 p.m. on Saturday. Alerted by their higher officials over cellphone, the trainee constables on duty in Marripudi village intercepted the accused and held them within half-an-hour of the crime and recovered two sovereign gold chains from them.

They later realised that it was a prize catch as the accused were inter-district offenders and involved in as many as eight cases of chain snatching and a couple of motorcycle lifting cases in Nellore, Chittoor, Nalgonda and Hyderabad districts.

‘Smart work’

Speaking to newspersons here on Sunday, Superintendent of Police (Administration), Satyanarayana, said that it became possible to apprehend the accused because the trainee constables were all intelligent and energetic. They were all recruited recently and posted to Marripudi village as part of social interaction and village visit programme.

As soon as the chain snatching incident was reported in Podili, the Sub-Inspector and Circle Inspector alerted the trainee constables posted to villages for social interaction.

On receiving the alert, the five constables doing duty in Marripudi divided themselves into three groups and kept a vigil on Podili road. After commiting the theft, the duo were fleeing on their motorcycle towards Marripudi. The first batch of two constables noticed them and tried to nab them. When the duo however gave them a slip and proceeded further, the constables alerted the second group keeping watch a little distance away. The second group intercepted the motorcycle and overpowered the accused.

Mr. Satyanarayana said that the Superintendent of Police and DIG appreciated their effort and rewarded the five constables with Rs. 100 each.
