GUNTUR: Two women died and two others were in critical condition after they sustained severe burns following a major fire in a cotton mill at Perecherla on the city outskirts on Saturday.

While 45-year-old Dayamani got charred on the spot, Chilaka Yellamma, 30, who along with two others, was admitted to Government General Hospital, died in the evening. Safety norms were thrown to the winds as a mechanical friction from the ginning mill no.3 led to the fire, District Fire Officer Ch. Samabasiva Rao said. The factory management of Sri Vijayalakshmi Cotton Mills could not locate the sound and that led to sparks coming from the machine guard igniting the ‘lint’.

District Collector B. Venkatesham promised compensation for all victims and ordered immediate sealing of the mill. This was the second such incident on Saturday in the district with another one taking place in a cotton mill at Brahmanapally. There was no loss of life, but pressed cotton bales got destroyed. The property loss was not much in either of the mills.
