WARANGAL: Senior member of the CPI(Maoist) Chettiraja Papaiah alias Somanna was killed in an encounter with the police here in the early hours of Sunday in the Medaram forest area.

Somanna was the North Telangana Special Zonal Committee (NTSZC) secretariat member and had been underground for more than two decades.

The police recovered an AK 47, a pistol and four kit bags from the encounter spot.

Major loss

The exchange of fire between the naxals and the police lasted for 30 minutes, according to information reaching here. Somanna belonged to Tekumatla village of Chityal mandal in the district and had been in the Maoist party for over two decades. He carried a reward of Rs. 10 lakh over his head. His death is believed to be a major loss to the Maoist party, particularly in the North Telangana area.

SP’s appeal

According to Superintendent of Police Soumya Mishra, over 50 cases, including 15 TADA cases, were registered against Somanna in Warangal, Khammam, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and other districts.

Somanna managed to escape in exchanges of fire for 15 times.

His wife Prameela alias Suguna is also working with the Maoist party.

She surrendered to the police in 2003 and joined the Moist party again after a year.

The SP and other senior police officers visited the spot. Ms Mishra reiterated that the underground cadre should come out and surrender for a better life.

She appealed to Somanna’s wife Prameela to give up arms and join the mainstream.
