Depleting water levels may hit supply in Karimnagar, Warangal and Medak

KARIMNAGAR: Karimnagar town is likely to face acute drinking water problem with the depletion of water in Lower Manair Dam (LMD) reservoir.

Though, the LMD reservoir was having storage capacity of 24 tmcft, the present level at the reservoir is only 4 tmcft on Saturday. With the prevailing heat wave conditions, the Municipal Corporation officials are worried about the project reaching dead storage level of 2 tmcft.

The LMD reservoir is supplying drinking water to Karimnagar and Sircilla towns. Besides, it has also become the only source of meeting the drinking water requirements of neighbouring Warangal town. With Warangal also facing acute drinking water shortage during this summer season, the irrigation officials are planning to release water to Warangal through Kakatiya canal to fill its water sources.

The officials of Karimnagar Municipal Corporation fear that the release of water to Warangal town would further aggravate the drinking water problem in Karimnagar. The release of water through Kakatiya canal would cause huge wastage during its journey to Warangal town as there is every possibility of farmers opening the gates to fill their fields and tanks along the canal, they added.

An official of Corporation said that already they were pumping water from the reservoir to the filter beds through boosters and if the water level further depletes the boosters would not be in a position to lift the water . On Saturday, the water level at the LMD was 883.90 feet with a storage capacity of 4 tmcft, he maintained.

Presently, the corporation is supplying 28 million litres per day (MLD) in the town. “We will be in a position to supply water to Karimnagar town on every alternate day during this summer season, if the irrigation officials do not release water to Warangal town”, he maintained.

In the meantime, the elected representatives of Karimnagar threatened to launch an agitation against the proposed release of water from LMD to neighbouring Warangal.
