Test results of 2 suspected swine flu cases awaited

Hyderabad: Test results of two suspected cases of influenza A (H1N1) admitted to Government General and Chest Hospital are awaited, authorities here on Monday said. One suspected person was travelling on British Airways flight (BA-277) and the other person is a 29-year-old woman who came to Hyderabad from USA on an Air India flight.

Till date seven cases of the flu virus were confirmed and samples of two suspected cases were sent for lab testing to National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD). “We are waiting test results after which we can declare their medical status,” said Dr. K. Subhakar, State co-ordinator for influenza A(H1N1), flu virus, at a press conference.

Dr. Subhakar said that the health authorities are monitoring the health conditions of 90 passengers on board the British Airways flight, BA-277 that landed in Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on may 31, where four cases were tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus.

Also, family members of the passengers and children are being monitored on a regular basis and being given antiviral capsules and syrups.

“We are keeping a thorough check on the relatives and persons who have come in contact with the passengers. We have also asked the Centre to provide an additional five lakh anti viral capsules for the State and each district hospital has been asked to make arrangements, in case of new cases,” said Dr. Ch. Jayakumari District Medical and Health Officer. Till date, medical teams have screened 95,000 passengers.
