Tension at Gowravaram

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: Barring a few minor instances of clashes, polling ended peacefully in Krishna district on Thursday. Tension prevailed at Gowravaram village in Jaggayyapeta Assembly constituency, when activists of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) pelted stones on the car in which Viswanadham, father of Congress candidate Samineni Udayabhanu, reached the polling station to monitor the poll process.

Though the reasons for the clash were yet to be established, it is learnt that the clash was the result of a wordy duel between the women activists of the two parties. Agitated workers of the TDP pelted stones on the car in which Mr. Viswanadham was travelling, besides ransacking the house of a local Congress activist. The polling process came to a standstill for about an hour. However, the police registered no case till the last reports came in. Similar clashes took place at Talluru and Vedadri in the same constituency.

At Ravicherla village in Nuzvid Assembly constituency, a clash between activists of the Congress and the Praja Rajyam hampered the poll process for about an hour in the morning. PRP nominee Muttamsetti Vijaya Nirmala accused the Congress activists of promoting their symbol near the polling booths. Taking strong objection to it, she staged a dharna at the polling booth. The police intervened and convinced the leaders of both the parties.

At Ghantasala village of Avanigadda Assembly constituency, the activists of the TDP alleged that the polling assistant was asking voters to vote for the Congress. The issue was resolved when the higher officials changed the polling assistant.

Krishna SP D. Ramakrishnaiah said that the polling was by and large peaceful.

Beaten up

A follower of Congress nominee in Vijayawada West Assembly constituency Mallika Begum was injured in a group clash at Wynchipet on Thursday.

According to the Kothapet police, the trouble began when three persons named Babu Khan, Suban Khan and Feroz Khan, followers of Jaleel Khan, the Congress rebel who is in the fray, picked up an argument with one Vinukonda Indrasekhar alias Sombabu, a follower of Ms. Begum, when the latter was returning home after casting his vote.

The trio reportedly accosted Sombabu near Naizam gate at Wynchipet. Though a few Congressmen went to the rescue of Sombabu, he was beaten badly by then. He lodged a complaint with the police. A case was registered.

In another incident, the Nunna rural police registered an assault case against Praja Rajyam Party nominee from the Vijayawada Central Assembly constituency Vangaveeti Radhakrishna. Ummadi Venkata Rao, president of the Vijayawada City Congress Committee BC cell, lodged a complaint with the police hat Mr. Radhakrishna assaulted him while he was returning from a polling station at Ajit Singh Nagar.
