TRS falls flat in Warangal district

Party manages to win only one Assembly seat as against seven in 2004 elections

KCR’s two visits to the district fail to enthuse crowd

TRS’ alliance with the TDP fails owing to mistrust

WARANGAL: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) which claimed to have a strong base in the district and took people for granted had to bite the dust this time by winning just one seat as against the seven in last Assembly elections.

Though there was the separate Telangana sentiment prevailing to some extent, people were thoroughly vexed with the TRS, which lacked organisational network and proper leadership.

People were disillusioned with the top leadership and even TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s meeting did not attract huge crowds during the campaign as was the case in the past.

Mr. Rao toured the district only twice, that too for a short time, and did not have much to say to the people except marketing the TDP’s free colour television and cash transfer scheme.

Erosion

The erosion of the TRS began with the last by-election when it lost Station Ghanpur Assembly and Warangal Parliament seat to the TDP. Four others – K. Laxma Reddy, Dugyala Srinivasa Rao, B. Sara Rani and Mandadi Satyanarayana Reddy -- differed with Mr. Rao’s style of leadership and got closer to the Congress soon after the last Assembly elections.

The alliance with the TDP did not work in favour of the TRS due to mutual mistrust and lack of coordination. The TDP cadre in Warangal East worked for the victory of Praja Rajyam candidate E. Pradeep Rao, who is brother of senior TDP leader Errabelli Dayakar Rao, thus giving an advantage to the Congress candidate B. Saraiah.

The same situation prevailed in all other constituencies. In Wardhannapet constituency, considered TDP stronghold, the votes did not get transferred to TRS candidate G. Vijayarama Rao who was defeated by K. Sridhar of the Congress.

Lone winner

The TRS chief’s style of functioning and dull speeches also contributed to the poor performance of his party in the district. The only candidate who won on TRS ticket is D. Vinay Bhaskar from Warangal West. His personal popularity and public sympathy helped him more than the Telangana factor.
