Stringent law soon to check red sanders smuggling

HYDERABAD: The Forest Department plans to introduce a legislation for taking stringent action against those smuggling red sanders.

The Chief Minister has directed the department to prepare a draft bill with strong penal provisions against the smugglers, K. D. R. Jayakumar, Special Secretary, Environment, Forests, Science and Technology, said here on Saturday.

Speaking at the A.P. State Vana Samrakshana meritorious services awards presentation function, he said that forest officers and staff should understand the legal framework and keep abreast of the new legislations to discharge their duties more effectively.


Forest Minister S. Vijayaramaraju who gave away medals to 26 award-winners from various divisions appreciated their dedication in protecting valuable forest resources and forest land from encroachers. He also complimented the Forest Department officials and staff for their efforts in improving forest cover which was reflected in elephants and other wild animals from Orissa heading to forests in the border districts of the State.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests C. Siva Sankar Reddy and Chief Wild Life Warden Hitesh Malhotra also addressed the gathering.
