Six arrested, ornaments seized

GUNTUR: The police on Monday arrested six persons belonging to two gangs on the charge of cheating women in temples and decamping with ornaments and recovered gold and silver ornaments valued at Rs.4.5 lakhs.

Guntur Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha, at a press conference here on Monday, said that four persons – Md. Jaffer Ali, 23, Shiya Bablu, 25, haling from Guntakal, Balul Ali, 52, and Esub Ali, 20, hailing from Kadiri in Anantapur district – used to cheat women posing as police personnel. They would approach old women and create a situation where they would tell them that there was security threat to their ornaments.

On the pretext of keeping them safe, they would decamp with the ornaments. They were active in Tamil Nadu and Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh and some cases were booked in Pattabhipuram and Kothapeta police stations in Guntur also. The police recovered 14 sovereigns of gold valued at Rs.1.5 lakh from them. Some members were charged with stealing silver articles valued at Rs.3 lakhs.
