Senior citizens seek better amenities

The JAC of Members of the Association of Senior citizens of Hyderabad, A.P. Senior Citizens Confederation and All India Senior Citizens Confederation have demanded the government to give health insurance cover to all senior citizens without restrictions at modest premium rates and also implement the existing National Policy on Older Persons with force.

Members of the JAC said that the health insurance must be fully subsidised for BPL and graded for others. Moreover, the government should also implement Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act in all the states, said R.N. Mittal, Co-ordinator, JAC in a press release on Thursday.

Immediate steps should be taken to implement the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme and the government should increase minimum pension to Rs. 550 per month apart from reducing the minimum age of the beneficiary to 60 years from 65 years, he said. The JAC is observing August 16 as the Senior Citizens National Protest Day to appeal to the government to act swiftly for the welfare of elderly persons.
