Self-defence course for girls launched

GUNTUR: A week-long tailor-made course in self defence for students of Vignan’s Nirula Institute Of Science and Technology for Women was inaugurated on the college premises at Pedapalakalur on Wednesday.

In view of the rising incidents of eve-teasing and atrocities against college girls, the Vignan Nirula management decided to sensitise students on various aspects of defending themselves in all situations and apprising them of the various legal provisions in case of indecent behaviour by boys, said its Executive Director Pathuri Koteswara Rao at the inaugural function.

Martial arts expert P. Chaitanya, a 4th DAN Black Belt of Tulasi Taekwon-Do Academy, from Guntur began the course by training them in physical exercises to be able to have some quick reflexes in case of emergencies like acid attack, physical teasing, said principal M. Ramjee.

The course contains classes by psychiatrists to maintain balance of mind during adverse situations, awareness by advocates to understand how our Constitution was protecting women, some physical exercise classes to come out unscathed when they face physical attacks, classes to face fire, acid attacks, first-aid course. The course does not interfere with the regular classes as it would held only for an hour daily.

This course makes the students self-confident, capable to face all situations.

The Vignan Group Director L. Rathiah said that the course was very important for their college as it was exclusively for girls.

He exhorted students to take active interest in the training.
