Ryots under SRSP to intensify stir

Lodge complaint against officials for ‘unlawful release of water'

Farmers under the SRSP Kakatiya canal ayacut are all set to stage rasta roko on National Highway-7 and NH-16 (both recently changed as NH-44 and 63 respectively) at Perkit near Armoor town demanding the government immediately stop the release of water in the flood flow canal.

Cutting across the political ideologies and affiliations all parties and organisations expressed the support to the demand and wanted to intensify agitation until the water release from the Sri Ram Sagar Project was stopped by authorities.

Farmers under the ayacut in the district alleged that the authorities acting at the behest of the Minister for Major Irrigation Ponnala Lakshmaiah planned to take at least 10 tmcf of water to Lower Maneru Dam (LMD) and thereby to Warangal district through the Flood Flow Canal (FFC) against the rules.

They strongly condemned the act saying that the 2,800 cusecs water was being released before giving it to farmers under Kakatiya, Lakshmi and Saraswathi canals.

Since the lift schemes on Kakatiya and Lakshmi canals are not yet started farmers are worried about the condition of paddy seedlings.

Water release into the FFC originally began on July 30 in the name of “trial run”, but the it was stopped for one day as the farmers raised objection and staged rasta roko. The Balkonda MLA E. Anil also took part in it.

Farmers even lodged a complaint with the police against officials for what they called the “unlawful release of water”.

Describing it as gross injustice to farmers in the district the Armoor MLA A. Annapoornamma said as per the norms water was released into all canals only after the CADA meeting after the water level reached the Full Reservoir Level (1091 ft) in the SRSP. But, the project authorities were adamant and said that they would stop the release into the FFC only when Mr. Lakshmaiah gives orders.

In fact, the LMD doesn't come under the purview except the Mid Maneru.

The MLA said FFC is run at the time when the FRL is 1091 ft and water is released into the river through dam gates. However, the present water level is 1076.70 with 46 tmcf in the reservoir.

And, observers feel that it may lead to unnecessary hatred among farmers.
