`Opportunities still aplenty for journalists'

Photojournalism has no course material or syllabusInstances of unprofessional conduct bemoaned

VISAKHAPATNAM: A sub-committee of the AP State Council of Higher Education going into restructuring of journalism courses will soon submit its report. Later it will be circulated to all universities to enable them to take up restructuring, veteran journalist and former Chairman of AP Press Academy Potturi Venkateswara Rao has said.

Participating in a `Get together' organised by Vizag Journalists' Forum here on Monday, he said the APSCHE chairman KC Reddy had appointed the sub-committee of which he was a member. On the aspects to be focused, he said there was room for improving craftsmanship in reporting. Journalists should also know certain aspects of law. Another setback was photojournalism had no course material or syllabus.

Mr. Venkateswara Rao who is a member of the Telugu University Executive Council, said it had appointed a sub-committee on the changes for journalism course for changes in journalism course. Also, to help students acquire working experience, practical training should be given by utilising the technology available, he suggested.

While complimenting the quality of reporting and use of language, he, however, bemoaned the spate of complaints against the unprofessional conduct of some journalists. Endeavour should be made for unbiased reporting and presentation of news.

Regretting attacks against journalists and newspapers, Mr. Venkateswara Rao said that when the dividing line between politics and newspapers got blurred, it would be difficult to strike a balance.

The increasing competition between the print and the electronic media and the Internet might lead to temporary dislocation as far as jobs were concerned but opportunities were aplenty for journalists, he said. VJF president S. Siva Sankar and secretary M. Yugandhar Reddy participated.
