Railway loco branch workers stage protest

VIJAYAWADA: Demanding sanction of required manpower and solution to other problems of loco workers, members of the South Central Railway Mazdoor Union’s electric loco branch on Tuesday staged lunch hour demonstration and gate meeting at the electric loco shed.

Speaking on the occasion, branch chairman S. Ranga Rao and secretary R. Bhupendra said that presently the loco shed was maintaining 174 locos, whereas the staff sanction was only for 120 locos. For the remaining 54 locos, 120 employees had to be recruited.

“Though the proposal is pending with the officials for a long time, there is no response from the higher ups. The workers are unable to bear the burden of additional work,” they said.

They alleged that the repair works were being carried out to tower cars without sanctioning any additional manpower. Without sanction of additional staff, it would not be possible to carry out repairs to the tower cars, they said. “Due to retirements and sudden death of workers, there are about 100 vacancies in the branch. Filling up of the vacancies is the need of the hour, and the management should recruit employees from the ground level,” they said.

Over 700 employees participated in the demonstration. Treasurer of the union S. Ram Mohan Rao and others were present. The employees later submitted a memorandum to the senior divisional electric engineer listing their demands.
