VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam Port Sports Council is cock-a-hoop as it regained The Hindu trophy it won last in 2002. It was runner-up twice later and on Wednesday at the Port stadium it faced a young team of Cavaliers C.C. consisting of many players, including from other districts, who are representing Andhra in South Zone tournaments.

But at the end, experience prevailed over youth and Ranji player Hemal Vatekar slammed an unbeaten century to lead VPSC to a convincing win.

It was also a pleasant coincidence that VPT Chairman Ajeya Kallam, who took charge recently, was the chief guest of the valedictory function and handed over the silver rolling trophy and a cash award of Rs.10,000 to the port team. It was after six years that an institutional team won the title.

Mr. Ajeya Kallam said the port was thinking of improving the sports facilities and a plan was being drawn to lay a tennis court . President of VDCA and former president of ACA D.V. Subba Rao recalled how a few players in their 40s came back and did well for their countries.

Vice-president of ACA and VDCA P.R. Narayanaswami, Secretary of VDCA K. Parthasaradhi, Chief of Bureau of The Hindu B. Prabhakkar Sharma, Major Port Sports Control Board D. Naresh Kumar and others were present.
