Protests over attack on Taslima continue

HYDERABAD: The attack on Bangladeshi feminist writer Taslima Nasreen by Majlis MLAs and their henchmen continued to draw flak from various quarters.

While the Communist Party of India (Marxist) opined that the method adopted by MIM members to articulate their views was “unfortunate”, Bharatiya Janata Mahila Morcha took out a rally on Saturday in protest against the Government’s inaction on the MLAs who openly attacked the writer who is granted amnesty by the Centre. While the BJP flayed the Government for its “appeasement policies” reflected by the case registered against Ms. Nasreen, a spokesman of the Home Minister’s office, however, said everybody had right to register their grievance in a democratic set up and the complaint was not an initiative of the police.

CPI (M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yehcury attributed the aggressive posture of the MIM to the increasing influence of the Left in the old city.

The MIM could go to people about the policies of the Left vis-À-vis their stand on issues instead of adopting tactics to physically prevent the CPI (M) from going to the people. Replying to queries, he said it was meaningless to drag the Left front Government in West Bengal into the issue as it was the Centre that gave amnesty to Ms. Nasreen.
