VIJAYAWADA: Speakers at an inter-collegiate life sciences festival called ‘Vruksha 2009’ organised by the Centre for Research and PG Department of Botany of Andhra Loyola College on Saturday dwelt at length on the emerging opportunities in life sciences for students.

T. Nirmala Mary, former Principal of University College in Acharya Nagarjuna University, said recent trends in applied biology and life sciences had thrown up lot more opportunities for young generation. Delivering the inaugural address on the occasion, she said that life sciences would continue to hold their place of pride despite new technological advances and processes.

D. Showraiah, Rector and Correspondent of ALC, exhorted the students to draw inspiration from great scientists and work with motivation to excel in basic sciences. In his welcome address, ALC Principal S. Emmanuel spoke of the increasing importance of biological sciences in various aspects of research.

Students of the Botany Department organised an exhibition of posters on various plants and biological processes. Life sciences students from nearly seven colleges from three coastal districts participated in the seminar.

The speakers threw light on the increasing relevance of applied biology, considering rapid strides being made in the realms of biological sciences. They pointed out that the applications of biology became crucial in increasing plant yields, production of vaccines, stem cell research, nano technology and other fields. Topics that came up for discussion at the seminar included bio-safety, medicinal plants in pharmacology, bio-fertilisers, oil palm hybrid seed production .
