‘This facilitates water supply for paddy fields in tail-end areas'

Irrigation personnel intend to close canals for repairs by April 10

Summer storage tanks meant for supply to villages have to be filled

BHIMAVARAM: Secretary of the Andhra Pradesh Rytu Karyacharana Samithi M.V. Suryanarayana Raju on Wednesday urged the West Godavari district administration to extend the date for closure of canals by 10-15 days to facilitate water supply for paddy fields in the tail-end parts.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Raju said the Irrigation Department personnel were attempting for closure of canals by April 10 to enable repair works to the canal system.

Recalling the late transplantations in the delta as an off-shoot of water shortage in the Godavari, he said the paddy fields in some areas required not less than two rounds of watering. Besides, the summer storage tanks, meant for water supply for villages, had to be filled on a priority basis, he added.

Fish farming

Mr. Suryanarayana Raju appealed to the district authorities to keep their word with respect to supply of water for fish farming. Recalling the statements by officials that the fishponds would be filled with canal water after watering for the paddy fields, he wanted the administration to do it now by extending the date of canal closure. It was quite unfair to deprive the fish farmers of water as they were also paying water cess at the rate of Rs. 500 per acre, he said.
