Play on Jyothirao Phule today

As many as 17 artistes, most of them from the Surabhi troupe, will take part in it

VIJAYAWADA: Marking the 76 {+t} {+h} birth anniversary of late Kanshi Ram, the founder of Bahujan Samaj Party, Dasya Theatre is performing a play titled ‘Mahatma Jyothirao Phule' at Tummalapallivari Kshetrayya Kalakshetram at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Entry is free.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, N.J. Vidya Sagar, who will play the role of the protagonist in the play, said that the three-hour play would depict the life and theory of the late Phule. As many as 17 artistes, most of who were from the renowned Surabhi troupe, would perform in the play that would give the message of unity among the backward classes, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes to get political power in their hands.

Mr. Vidya Sagar said they had already given three performances in Hyderabad, including two in Ravindra Bharati auditorium, and received a loud applause from the audience.

After Saturday's performance here, the troupe would perform in Guntur on Sunday evening at Sri Venkateswara Vijnana Mandiram. “Even a common man can find himself in many of the characters in the play. The play depicts the life of the downtrodden in the 19 {+t} {+h} century and the services rendered to them by the great Phule,” he explained.
