HYDERABAD: Five political parties on Tuesday agreed to organise a joint demonstration here to mount pressure on the State government to take steps against price rise.

A round-table conference of leaders of the parties – Telugu Desam, CPI, CPI (M), Praja Rajyam and Lok Satta – also decided that a joint letter be initially written to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, suggesting specific steps to check price rise. The parties hoped the proposals would come up for discussion in the ensuing budget session of Assembly. If the government failed to react in the Assembly, they would organise a demonstration to attract public attention to the problem, said B.V. Raghavulu, State secretary of CPI (M) which hosted the meeting.

Mr. Raghavulu criticised the State government for overlooking price rise as though it was a non-issue. Price rise impacted the poor heavily as they could not afford routine food, leave alone nutrition.

T. Devender Gowd of Praja Rajyam said the government tried to absolve itself of the responsibility of checking price rise by expressing helplessness. The government failed to plan in advance or build a mechanism that gave inputs about the possibility of price rise. Such a practice prevailed in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

P. Yadagiri, MLC of Telugu Desam, assured that his party would abide by any decision taken at the meeting
