Linked to two canals, it will be used for drinking, irrigation

ANANTAPUR: Minister for Panchayat Raj and Endowments J.C. Diwakar Reddy released water from the Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservior (PABR) Right Canal by lifting the canal shutters near Korrakodu village of Kuderu mandal in the district on Tuesday.

This water will be impounded in 42 tanks linked to the Right Main Canal and Dharmavaram Branch Canal to cater to drinking water needs.

Zilla Parishad Chairperson T. Kavitha, Anantapur MP A. Venkatarami Reddy, Anantapur legislator B. Narayana Reddy, Singanamala legislator S. Sailajanath and others were also present.

The Minister said water to the tanks was being given -- as per Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's promise -- from the 10 tmcft water allocated to PABR. Release of water to tanks under the right canal would be a permanent feature, he stated.

Transmission losses

Meanwhile, engineers of HLC, of which PABR has been made a component, stated that 4 tmcft of water was required to impound the 42 tanks including transmission losses as the canal was unlined and unstabilised and its bed had dried up.

Though the Minister stated that the water would be used only for drinking purposes, the engineers stated it would also be used to save the standing crops in the ayacut of the tanks.

They appealed to farmers to cooperate with irrigation officials as the water would not flow unless farmers in the upper reaches of the canal let the water below through sluices or other arrangements.

They proposed to monitor the water release with the help of five patrol teams .
