NELLORE: A 60-year-old man, E. Ramanaiah, who was waiting in the queue at a polling booth for his turn, collapsed due to sunstroke in Chillakur mandal in the district on Thursday.

The family members of Ramanaiah who accompanied him, rushed the victim to a private hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Voters said that the old man stood in the queue for some time and died due to sun stroke.

At many polling stations, elderly persons were seen covering their heads with towels and women with saris to avoid sun. In some booths, the elderly and handicapped persons were given priority for voting.

No drinking water

The voters expressed concern over the officials not arranging drinking water at the polling stations. “In some places the polling booths were situated at distant places and we came on foot. But, there were no tents and drinking water facilities at the polling stations,” said a 65-year-old woman, Savithri.
